Aleksandrovitch Nikolae Hel
A childlike optimist, Aleks is headmaster of Shadowgrail Academy and legal guardian of Dante. He views the teenager as he would if he had his own children, and is rather attached to the boy. He is friendly to most all people, and has a slightly overly-trusting view of others. Aleks was the illegitimate child of the former headmaster (Matvei Viktor Hel), and always looked up to his half-brother, Nathaniel. He studied medicine and was aiming to be a doctor until both his brother and his sister-in-law, Olivia, were murdered during the Uprise of the Aristocrats, and he gave up his ambition to take up caring for his nephew. As much as he loves the Academy, he feels caged and unhappy, surprising because of his jovial image. He has a limp in his right leg from a failed kneecapping attempt during the bloodier years of the City. When he is with Elias, he often speaks Russian, and he is fond of violins and other beautiful things.

Dante Sacha Hel
Dante was raised by Aleks since the age of four, and is very protective of his uncle, aware of his twisted, altruistic nature. He states at one point that he doesn't really miss his parents, as he never knew the people. He is quiet and composed at first glance, but his cool air is countered by a hot temper and adamant hatred for lying. The prospect of change scares him, and he is unfriendly and aloof to strangers. He rather dislikes Elias, as the man is governed by himself and listens to no one, leading Dante to believe him to be a 'cocky, pretentious prat, along with a fool'. He doesn't like being left out of things, and therefore doesn't like to be around when Aleks is speaking to the man in 'tongues'. Slowly, he becomes accustomed to housing Ivy, and finally trusts her enough to at least smile. He was taught to play piano when he was seven, and recieved a hunting falcon as a 'gift' from Elias when he first arrived, much to his despair. He is fond of music, and enjoys writing when it doesn't involve studies.

Ivy Eda Brookwood
A sensible girl, Ivy cannot help but be consumed by her curiosity. She often scolds herself inwardly for asking too many questions and favors of the household, but has a thirst to learn more of them. She is mostly caught up in the situations at hand, and is normally a witness of the humerous banter tossed by the men of the manor. Ivy spends her time alone in her given room, writing letters to her father, a Treial soldier fighting in the skirmishes. Though she loves him, she rare-to-never recieves any replies, and is actually pretty lonely. Later on, she considers being sent to Odess an 'eye-opening experience to her mind-numbing world'. Ivy is found with Dante in spare hours, and is never quite sure what to think of Elias Vaughn. She is fond of horses and rather hates it when people refuse to talk with her.

Elias Vaughn Lenka Hel
Elias is a mysterious synic and a drunk, governed by his own laws. He doesn't really care what others think of him, though it is obvious that he is not innocent in the ways of certain crimes. Always armed and loaded, he may be reckless with everything else, but Elias Vaughn is never careless with a weapon. His only trusted friend is his cousin Aleks, and he takes refuge in the Academy when he passes through, as he travels most everywhere. He is often teasing Dante about his serious attitude, but would actually never wish harm on the boy. Most of the time, Vaughn just ignores Ivy completely until significant time goes by. He is half Ziranian, half Odessan, and has a thin, mixed accent from all of the traveling done. He is blind in his left eye, as Ivy noted that he was 'well-proportioned, yet scattered with hiding scars'. He is the sole source of hatred for the Beauvallets to the Hels, and had a very large involvement in the Uprise. He enjoys toying with peoples' emotions, and, contradicting his whole image, secretly dislikes injustice.

Metzer Liukai Beauvallet, Jr. A young noble, Metzer is misunderstood on many levels. He is the heir of the Beauvallet House, just as Dante is the Hel Estate, and is considered the 'household idiot'. He is quick to anger, and has an abiding distaste for the Hel family due to a scandal involving Elias years ago. He vowed to his younger sister, Netalea Beauvallet,
that he would 'get even' with the Hels, and earn the respect he feels he deserves within his home. He
was named for his father, whom was murdered in the Uprising of the Aristocracy.
